PRESS RELEASE - June 30th 2010

HILLARY INSTITUTE NAMES 2010 HILLARY LAUREATE

PEGGY LIU

The Institute’s international board, the Hillary Summit has named China’s Peggy Liu as the 2010 Hillary Laureate for exceptional Leadership in Climate Change Solutions.

Ms Liu is the Institute’s second international annual Laureate, following Jeremy Leggett in 2009, renowned author and Chair of Solar Century, the UK’s leading solar provider.

Based in Shanghai with offices in Beijing and Washington DC, Peggy is Chairperson of JUCCCE (Joint US-China Collaboration on Clean Energy), China’s leading Non-Profit dedicated to changing the way China creates and uses energy. JUCCCE has a 10-year mandate to visibly accelerate the practical application of green technologies.

“….because the future of the world’s sustainability lies in the greening of China. We believe that due to climate change timelines and China’s development timelines, the next 5-8 years are a crucial window where we must achieve dramatic and systemic change in human behaviour towards a more sustainable balance between society and nature. That’s why each of our programs is designed to be a game-changer and have a visible milestone within three years”.

Honored as a Time Magazine Hero of the Environment (2008) and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2009). Peggy was an adviser to the Clinton Global Initiative (2008) on Energy & Climate Change. Most recently she was COO of Mustang Ventures, an early-stage venture capital fund in Shanghai. Peggy, an active alumna of MIT, organized the MIT Forum on the Future of Energy in China 2007 from which JUCCCE was formed. In the 1990's she was on the cover of "Red Herring Hits" as an Internet pioneer in Silicon Valley. She was also a McKinsey & Co. management consultant. Peggy is Chinese-American and resides in Shanghai. She has a B.S. from MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. She has been in non-profit leadership positions for most of her life and has a passion for making the world a better place.

“This is a bold and exciting decision by our governors from a global watch-list of exceptional mid-career nominees world-wide. We are delighted to name JUCCCE Chairperson Peggy Liu as our 2010 Laureate,” says Hillary Institute Executive Director Mark Prain.
“China is arguably the critical player in addressing today’s global energy challenge. JUCCCE is doing exceptional work in this field, and its Chair’s leadership is outstanding. The Institute looks forward to working with Peggy starting today in Beijing, and bringing her down to New Zealand to lead our 2010 Annual Symposium later this year.”

“I'm truly honored. This award represents the hard work of a large team of staff, volunteers, and partners that have joined JUCCCE to make a global impact,” says Hillary Laureate Peggy Liu. “Every day, I feel lucky that the work of JUCCCE inspires people to make a difference.”

The 2010 Hillary Laureate Award will be presented to Peggy Liu at the 2010 JUCCCE China Energy Forum, June 30th, in Beijing by IPCC Chair, Nobel Laureate, and Hillary Institute International Board Governor Dr. Rajendra Pachauri. He will be supported by Institute Executive Director Mark Prain and New Zealand’s Ambassador to China, Carl Worker.

Co-organized by JUCCCE and the National Academy for Mayors of China (NAMC), the Forum gathers 400 high-level attendees from around the world, and will feature stories from China’s mayors and State Owned Enterprises.

About JUCCCE

Internationally recognized for their work, JUCCCE collaborates across borders and sectors to showcase readily deployable energy smart solutions for China. It helps these solutions scale across China by leveraging government channels to reach key energy decision makers, mayors, industry executives and consumers. A non-profit organization working with difference-makers from around the world and across many sectors, JUCCCE has a 10-year mandate to visibly accelerate the greening of China. JUCCCE's key programs include training mayors in China on energy smart cities, helping students become green advocates through energy efficient light-bulb giveaways and energy education, and a smart grid cooperative.

JUCCCE views the challenge of changing the trajectory of energy use through a change management lens, rather than just a technology or policy lens. How do we reach key energy decision makers through scalable channels? How can we facilitate dialogue for mutual understanding?

About the HILLARY INSTITUTE

The Hillary Institute of International Leadership is a New Zealand-based organization named after legendary mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, which supports mid-career world leaders with annual awards. The work of the Institute is focused globally, recognizing exceptional leaders through its international board of governors The Hillary Summit, selecting one Laureate annually and bestowing its premium award the Hillary Step*, every four years.

In addition to its Awards Programme, the Institute holds annual Symposia both in New Zealand and internationally, developing ongoing partnerships to explore achievement and create integrated linkages between people and organizations, representing the latest thinking on a chosen focus area over a minimum period of four years. The current Leadership focus (2008-12), is Climate Change Solutions.

(*) the annual Hillary Laureates will be eligible for the USD100,000 Hillary Step in 2012. Named after the final, almost vertical 40-foot cliff that Sir Ed Hillary and Tenzing Norgay scaled in reaching the summit of Everest, The Hillary Step is a metaphor for the ultimate challenges innovative leaders face.
