The Very Reverend Peter BeckPeter is the Dean of the Cathedral in the Square, the heart and soul of Christchurch. It is as he puts it ‘the best job in the Church for me!’ Born in England, he and his wife Gay came to New Zealand in 1981. A graduate of Oxford University and an Anglican priest for 35 years he has always seen his ministry as engaging with the issues of the world, getting out and meeting people in all walks of life, and exploring with them what gives meaning, value and purpose in their lives. His association with Sir Ed goes back to his time at St Matthew in the city in Auckland when Sir Ed and Lady Hillary supported some of the project work there. Latterly though their relationship was deepened when Peter joined Sir Ed in Antarctica to lead the 25th anniversary service of the Erebus disaster. A much enjoyed night at the A frame hut with Sir Ed is another memorable moment! Peter was privileged to be asked by Lady Hillary to take part in Sir Ed’s funeral in January of this year. He is a regular commentator on public issues in press, radio and T.V. Peter and Gay have three adult children who are all pursuing their own careers, two of them thankfully back from their extended OE, and the other due to return this year from Spain. Peter and Gay enjoy the delights of tramping, relish their good luck in having a bach at Lake Clearwater, value the cultural diversity of Christchurch and the occasional fine red from the local Waipara vineyards. |
